Lee is from Edina, Minnesota, and hockey wasn’t his only sport — he was a star high-school quarterback before choosing hockey for good. He played his college hockey at Notre Dame, and the Islanders grabbed him in the sixth round of the 2009 draft, the kind of late pick who is supposed to top out as a depth player.
Instead he became the captain. Lee took the C in 2018, right after a career-high 40-goal season in 2017-18 — and most of those 40 were scored the hard way: standing in front of the net, taking the cross-checks, and tipping pucks past goalies who couldn’t see around him. Power forwards grow into that job; Lee has owned it for years.
