Carolina took Svechnikov with the second overall pick in the 2018 NHL draft, after a junior season with the Barrie Colts — he had arrived in North America as the top pick in the 2017 CHL Import Draft, and he was in the Hurricanes’ lineup at 18 years old.
In October 2019 he scored the first lacrosse-style goal in NHL history, scooping the puck onto his blade behind the net and tucking it in from behind the goal line. About two months later, he did it again. Plenty of players have tried the move since; Svechnikov is the one who made it an NHL thing.
That same era gave Carolina its “bunch of jerks” identity. The team’s choreographed post-win celebrations at center ice — the Storm Surge — drew a famous on-air scolding from a television commentator, who called the Hurricanes a bunch of jerks. The fans adopted it overnight, and it’s still part of the personality at the Lenovo Center in Raleigh, where the Canes play their home games.
