Philadelphia drafted Dawkins in the second round of the 1996 draft out of Clemson, and it took about one season for the city to adopt him as its own. He played with an emotion most safeties keep bottled — the alter ego he called “Weapon X” came out on game days, all energy and violence at the line of scrimmage — and the fans fed on it. Those tunnel entrances at the Vet, and later the Linc, were theater — the crowd losing its mind before the defense had played a snap.

Dawkins is the rare member of the 30-30-25 club — 30-plus interceptions, 30-plus forced fumbles and 25-plus sacks, a stat line almost no defensive back has ever touched. He was a 9-time Pro Bowler and a member of the NFL’s 2000s All-Decade Team, and he anchored the defense that carried the Eagles to Super Bowl XXXIX. He finished his career with three seasons in Denver — but he was always an Eagle.
