Brees came out of Purdue as a second-round pick in the 2001 draft, taken by San Diego — and his career nearly ended there. He suffered a serious shoulder injury in the final game of the 2005 season, the kind quarterbacks don’t always come back from. New Orleans signed him in 2006 anyway, while he was still rehabbing, barely a year after Hurricane Katrina had torn through the city.
